Speaker Biographies

Alistair Parker
Partner, Retail Development, Cushman & Wakefield

Alistair has, for the last 20 years (or so), been working in retail-led town centre development on behalf of both property companies and local authorities at home and abroad. Current projects include the town centre schemes in Sheffield, Stockport, Guildford, Crawley and Preston. Other involvements include advising the MCC on the redevelopment of Lord’s Ground, the City of London on tax increment finance and relocation of London’s Design Museum.

Past schemes includes Liverpool One, Cairo’s Citystars, Banbury’s Castle Quay, Basingstoke’s Festival Place, Leicester’s Shires, Beirut’s Souks and Canterbury’s Whitefriars. He is particularly interested in effective local government partnerships, viable urban regeneration, reduced planning complexity and European policy/directives constraints to what our industry tries to achieve.

Tim Foley
Partner, Clyde & Co

Tim is a partner in the dispute resolution group. He has been at Clyde & Co since 1998 and has worked both in Guildford and Dubai. His main area of practice is commercial dispute resolution with particular emphasis on contentious property matters. Tim advises on breach of covenant (both freehold and leasehold), dilapidations, forfeiture, service charges, lease renewals, rent reviews, possession actions, nuisance, trespass and all types of landlord and tenant issues. Tim acts for diverse clients across the property industry including major retailers, developers, property companies and international companies with property interests in the UK.

George MacDonald
Deputy Editor, Retail Week

George MacDonald is deputy editor of Retail Week and has written for the title for more than 10 years. During that time he has followed sectors ranging from the supermarkets to department stores and interviewed many of the industry’s biggest names. He is now responsible for much of Retail Week’s City coverage and specialises in companies including  Marks & Spencer and Dixons. He is a frequent TV and radio commentator on retail trends and issues.

Richard Akers
Managing Director, Retail Portfolio

Joined the Board in May 2005, following his appointment as Managing Director, Retail Portfolio in July 2004. A chartered surveyor, Richard joined the Group in 1995 and previously held the position of Head of Retail Portfolio Management. Richard is President of the British Council of Shopping Centres (BCSC), the main industry body for retail property owners.


David Shaw
Head of Regent Street Portfolio, The Crown Estate

David is responsible for the Crown Estate’s £ 2bn Regent Street portfolio where over the past nine years he has been leading its award winning transformation. Delivering an investment and development programme to make Regent Street an exemplar of portfolio management.

Norges Bank Investment Management have recently acquired a 25% interest in the portfolio.

Prior to The Crown Estate he was Property Director of a Nomura subsidiary focused on real estate partnerships, a Management Board Director of retailer the Burton Group responsible for retail planning and property and Director of Rosehaugh subsidiary Shearwater. David is a Director the New West End Company.

Dennis Turner
Chief Economist, HSBC Bank plc

Dennis Turner is the Chief Economist of HSBC Bank plc in the City. His role involves advising lending bankers on economic trends at national level and also on industries and regions. His principal interests outside office hours are music and football and his publications include the definitive history of Fulham Football Club, the need for an Industrial Investment Bank in the UK, analyses of the textile and construction industries, and critiques on the recordings of Van Morrison, Joe Cocker and Ray Charles.
